OK, here’s the reason I called you here:
Lots of therapists use flyers (we’re talking shoved through letterbox style) to attract prospective clients — do you? (you should…you’re about to find out why)
With the internet there are plenty of ’snazzy’ ways of attracting clients online BUT Flyering — DONE RIGHT — can be a very effective method of ensuring the phone keeps ringing.
Here are a couple of ways to ensure your Flyer packs a more profitable punch.
In direct marketing we use a thing called a ‘Lift Note’. It’s a device used in mailings to lift response rates. Typically it’s a sheet of paper folded in half with a ‘teaser’ on the front and a ‘personal note’ inside.
A flyer is normally just one sheet of paper (typically A4 or A5) - the main 3 reasons for this include cost - cost and cost!
So how can we use the time-tested proven effectiveness of lift-notes on our Flyer??
Enter our good friend the people at 3M and that remarkable invention — the Post-It note.
Here’s a little back-story:
Social scientist Randy Garner found that the little yellow squares pack a very persuasive punch by increasing readership by over 100%!!
Here’s the thing — your post-it note MUST be a personally written note that makes a specific and personal request of the intended reader.
So, how does this factor in with Flyering.
OK. So number 1. you’ve pre-determined a specific geographical locale of - say - 300 households that you’re going to test this idea out on.
2. Your Flyer is focussed on ONE thing (always only one thing on your flyer…the number of times I see the every-problem-solved approach…doesn’t work ok) …lets - for the sakes of argument say it’s good ol’ Weight Loss.
3. You know the PURPOSE of your Flyer. Is it to drive readers online where they can download your “5-proven steps to lose 5 pounds in 5 days with nothing but the power of your mind”? Is it to drive them to a FREE 0800 RECORDED MESSAGE that gives free tips to start feeling thinner and happier today? Is it to drive them to be one of the first 50 to get to the village hall for a FREE talk about how they can use a few simple mental techniques to immediately start shedding the pounds?…
…Decide what the INTENTION of the piece is…and, as you may have picked up from the examples above — NEVER TRY TO “SELL” SOMEONE ON BOOKING WITH YOU FROM THE FLYER. Use it to give them some cool free information that wil help them, and capture their details whilst you do it (as in the examples above: get name and email to deliver free report / get contact details from attendants of the village hall gig…/ leverage some kind of action from your prospect.
4. You’ve made sure it’s CLEAR WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO after reading the Flyer. And you’ve clearly explained HOW to do it. (Flyers must be simple…the number of therapists I see using their Flyer to tell the prospect ALL about them…not good… it’s a mechanism to deliver useful, relevant free content that ’starts the relationship’.)
SO WHAT ABOUT OUR POST-IT NOTE??
Well for 300 Post-It notes you’re probably going to have to spend all of £3. Then the boring bit will be one night, whilst your watching telly start writing a personal message such as “Please read this because I think it will be helpful.” and then put your name.
Now, anybody who understands Social Psychology will realise that there’s alot going on here. Remember the biggest hurdle with Flyers is getting someone to read the damn thing. We’re also using that great Robert Cialdini ‘because’ thing…there’s no real reason given, but it’s much more likely someone will read it because, well, just because…
Also the extra effort and personal touch implied by a hand-written note will certainly increase the need for your reader to reciprocate the effort (hopefully, if you’ve down your job properly, by doing what you’re asking of them).
Remember the humble Post-It can more than double your response rates so try it.
James.
P.S. No time to deliver 300 Flyers?? Quick solution - enrol the local newsagent into including it in their paper deliveries for a split of revenues attributed to the Flyer — OR — write a quick ad for a local shopwindow for anyone who wants to earn £20 for delivering 300 flyers (about 2 hours work) To ensure they’re actually delivered - cut them in on additional profits generated by the Flyer…
…or, ask the cleaner…they always know someone!! (no cleaner, ask at the laundrette)
P.P.S If a strategy like this was suitable for you - this would be just One of many things we would work on with you personally in this programme…yes I’m talking everything from design to execution.
On this programme we will create a Tailor made solution for YOU that gets YOU more clients and as close to an immediate return on investment as humanly possible.
